Read MoreAt Cowries St. Merryn, one of our favourite pastimes is exploring the shores of Booby’s Bay, searching for the beautiful and elusive cowrie shells. In fact, this love for these ocean treasures is why our house is named Cowries. The seven cowrie shells in our logo represent the iconic Seven Bays of St. Merryn, each one a unique gem of the Cornish coastline.
Booby’s Bay is a haven for shell hunters, particularly those in search of cowries. These small, glossy shells are often hidden among the rocks and sandy stretches, waiting to be uncovered by those with a keen eye. While you’ll find a variety of shells along the bay, cowries are a particularly special find.
The cowrie shells you’ll come across around the Seven Bays are from the European Cowrie, a species native to our coastal waters. Their smooth, rounded surface and delicate ridges make them stand out from other beach treasures, and their lustrous shine has fascinated people for centuries.
Cowries are more than just pretty shells; they’re part of a fascinating natural and cultural history. These marine gastropod mollusks, often referred to as sea snails, have a rich heritage across the globe. The name “porcelain” actually comes from the old Italian word for the cowrie shell, given their similar smooth and polished appearance.
Historically, certain cowrie species were once used as currency in various parts of Africa, Asia, and the Pacific. The shells were prized for their durability and beauty, making them a symbol of wealth and status. In addition to being used as money, cowries were often incorporated into jewellery and worn as ornaments.
Next time you’re visiting St. Merryn, take a stroll down to Booby’s Bay and see what the tide has left behind. With a bit of luck, you might just find a cowrie shell glistening in the sand. Whether you’re a seasoned shell collector or just looking for a fun way to spend the day, hunting for cowries is a timeless activity that connects us with the beauty and history of the ocean.
At Cowries, we celebrate this connection, and our namesake shells serve as a reminder of the seven beautiful bays that surround us. Happy shell hunting!
