A Wild Adventure: Exploring Newquay Zoo’s Animal Wonders and Conservation Efforts

If you’re after a fun and affordable way to spend a few hours near St Merryn, Newquay Zoo is a fantastic option. While it’s not large enough to fill an entire day, it offers plenty of charm and fascinating wildlife to keep the family entertained for a few hours.

During our visit, we were delighted to see some of the zoo’s most popular residents, including the adorable red panda, who never fails to capture hearts with its playful demeanour. The majestic lynx family was another highlight, prowling with their grace and beauty. We also loved watching the pelicans, with their distinctive beak and leisurely movements, and the ever-popular penguins, whose playful antics are always fun to watch, especially during feeding time!

Sadly, the sloth was hiding when we stopped by, but that only adds to the excitement for the next visit—sometimes it’s the luck of the draw! The zoo’s collection of monkeys kept us thoroughly entertained, especially the lively squirrel monkeys, who were full of energy, not forgetting the cheeky yellow mongoose.

Newquay Zoo isn’t just about fun—it also plays a vital role in wildlife conservation. Home to over 1,000 animals from around the world, the zoo actively participates in breeding programs for endangered species. For example, they are part of the international breeding program for the red panda, a species that faces threats from habitat loss in its native Himalayan forests.

Additionally, the zoo supports efforts to protect animals like the critically endangered Visayan warty pig and the black wildebeest. Through its conservation projects, Newquay Zoo not only provides a sanctuary for animals but also educates visitors about the importance of wildlife preservation and sustainability. Their commitment extends globally, with support for Biodiversity and Species Protection programs across the world.
